Challenges associated with Pharmaceutical / API Effluent Treatment

Richa Environmental a Trusted name in the field of water and wastewater treatment plants

The foremost trouble in pharmaceutical Industry/ API is recalcitrant organics

  • · Toluene

  • · Phenols

  • · Nitrophenols

  • · Nitroaniline

  • · Trichloromethyl propanol (TCMP), and

  • · Other pollutants that show resistance against biodegradation.

What is recalcitrant organic?

Recalcitrant organics do not undergo any biological degradation neither under anaerobic nor under anaerobic conditions.

Since recalcitrant organic pollutants cannot be easily removed by biological treatment, this is the reason most of the pharmaceutical ETPs employed with biologically treatment shows no change in BOD and COD reduction, in the effluent.

What is the solution for Pharmaceutical/ API effluent treatment?

Solution is first neutralizing recalcitrant organics than follow the standard Chemical & Biological Treatment process

Special condition in case of TCMP (1,1,1-trichloro-2-methyl-2-propanol) treatment

First follow Biological Treatment, then follow neutralization of TCMP than gain follow Biological and chemical treatment.

Oxygen biological pretreatment of the wastewater for the removal of other biodegradable organics is crucial. It is concluded that biological pretreatment of pharmaceutical wastewater before neutralization treatment should be used in order to increase the level of treatment.
